Role: Wordsmith

Dark clouds brooded in the slate grey skies, as a light rain pattered against the glass walls of the conservatory. It was a typical English summer and I was just wrapping up my lesson to the Queen about the use of knives in shooting games when SMASH! Out of nowhere, a platoon of German ninjas burst in! 'Watch out your majesty, I don't think they're here for tea,' I quipped, placing myself between her and my foes. It's fortunate a gentleman is always prepared and so, unsheathing my rapier from inside my cane I quickly dispatched the impertinent Jerrys. 'I do apologise your majesty but we'll have to cut this lesson short. Same time next week?' I took her open mouthed look of amazement to be an answer in the affirmative and made my exit, leaving the corpses for the help to deal with. Strolling to my favourite tea house, I attempted to piece together what it all meant over an Earl Grey. Was Kaiser Wilhelm back? Were the fifth reich making their move? So lost was I in though I almost didn't notice the two letters burning in to the ever present clouds. It seems things are about to get interesting around here...

...what's that? You want to hear something about gaming? Very well: I love videogames. Videogames are my saucy mistress to my cold 'missionary with the lights off' wife reality. My first console was the game boy original when I was five, and unfortunately I sucked at games. Sucked bad. With the exception of the pokemon games (which I'm awesome at btw) the first game I played all the way to the end was Bioshock a few years ago. Passion for gaming kept me strong though, and now here I am finishing Deus Ex 3 on the hardest setting and writing about games like some kind of expert. Now that's kind of awesome.

How Twitch Plays Pokemon restored my faith in humanity

You could be forgiven for thinking that democracy is a failing system. With revolutions in parts of Eastern Europe, America turning into a George Orwell novel and the global banking system falling around our ears, it’s easy to be cynical about our system of government. It’s enough to make you think maybe we should go back to a feudal monarchy, like the good old days. Yet there’s a ray of light shining through our dark dystopian times, proof that despite the Read more [...]

I'm sorry your party is in another castle...

The new party multiplayer

Hanging out with friends used to be a big part of gaming. Going over to their place to play some SNES or breaking out the link cable in a lunch break for a quick pokebattle was all a part of the fun. And as we got a little older many a six pack was shared over a game of Mario Kart on a Friday night. If you wanted to share the gaming experience, you had to do it in person. But now that the internet is a thing I can log onto Steam at any time of day and play a game with thousands of people from all Read more [...]

Super Hot Thumbs

SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT.

The narrow hall is filled with bullets. At one end are three gunmen, identical silhouettes of red in black sunglasses. At the other end is me: unarmed and out in the open. Across the screen flashes a message: ‘TAKE THEM OUT,’ and I begin to move. A pistol winks at me from the carpeted floor, but half a hallway sits between me and it. As chaos erupts all around me and death seems all but certain, I do what years of hard won FPS experience screams at me not to do. I stay out in the Read more [...]

Review: Capsule

The numbers on the counter slowly tick down, marking my distance from salvation. With each breath the oxygen levels dip, my laboured breathing beginning to drown out even the groans of the capsules protesting engine. The sound of my own breathing seems deafening ,growing more laboured with each gasp. Hunched over the sterile blue display I watch the distance to my destination tick down. The number is falling fast, but the oxygen levels are falling faster still. I increase power to Read more [...]

Farcry 3 Thumbnail

The one thing everybody missed about Far Cry 3

A great deal has already been said about Far Cry 3. The excellent performance of Michael Mando as Vaas, the balance of stealth and action gameplay and the need to kill more animals than Cruella de Vil to make a wallet and backpack have all been written about on numerous other websites in great detail. It has received a cornucopia of nines, tens as well as dozens of awards and nominations.   Yet amongst all these accolades and awards, something has been missed. Rook island is filled with Read more [...]

The kindawesome PAX Roundup

Never before have I played such wildly different games in such a short space of time. Within one day I went from playing the indie title Blunt Instrument on the Occulus Rift to playing the board game Munchkins Apocalypse. The variety of games on show was amazing, and no matter what kind of gamer you were, there was something at PAX Australia for you to get excited about.   For me, there was one moment that really summed up the feeling of PAX Australia. I was in the board game free play Read more [...]

Behind the Keyboard – Hugh Jeremy: Carpenter

The games industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. It's grown from a lone few dedicated coders to encompass a wide range of positions, from coders and artists to economists and experimental psychologists. Then there's Hugh Jeremy, who from following his exploits, appears to be the games equivalent of James Bond. I was able to catch him whilst playing a game of high stakes baccarat, and ask a few questions about how it all got started.     For the Read more [...]
