Nemesis moving forward at 20th Century Fox?
You probably know comic book author Mark Millar’s name for his graphic novel works adapted to film such as Wanted and the hugely popular Kick-Ass franchise, and having worked on many other series across the big two publishers Marvel and DC and other small publishers, there is one property in particular that Millar has been eager for some time to get into production.
That project is ‘Nemesis’ based on the 2010 graphic novel of the same name from Icon Comics. Word from Millar is that it is now moving forward into the production stages with 20th Century Fox with director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) and his screenwriter brother Matthew Carnahan, though nothing is yet official.
The story follows Matt Anderson, billionaire playboy by day and costumed vigilante by night. So far so Batman, but the difference here is that Nemesis is actually a anti-hero villain type hell bent on terrorizing Washington DC police Chief Officer Blake Morrow and taking down the US government through his violent (and usually more than sufficiently gruesome) acts of terrorism. The original pitch for the story even posed the question “What if Batman became The Joker?”
Millar himself even went on to suggest (somewhat boastfully) that he thought it would be one of the best films of this decade having posted an almost painfully lengthy statement on his official website over the weekend. We won’t subject you to the encyclopaedia length manifesto but here are some excerpts from that article…
“Nemesis is one of the most relentless and powerful screenplays I’ve ever read. I was actually shell-shocked after reading it, thinking about it for hours afterwards and discussing it with the family. As a movie, the Carnahan’s have crafted something we’ve never actually seen before and I feel like someone in Julia Phillips’ office must have felt when Paul Schrader’s Taxi Driver script first landed on their desk. This is going to be one of the best movies of the decade. The fact that it’s a superhero movie is incredibly exciting to me. This is the next step for where a comic-book adaptation can go and, simply as a viewer; I’m now counting down the days until I can sit in a screening room and see the first cut.”
“This is going to be massive.”
“This is my new favourite movie and it’s still a year or two away from anyone even seeing it. It’s going to be the biggest and smartest action movie we’ve all seen in a very, very long time.”
Seeing as how Millar has said this all before what do you think? Are you excited for Nemesis? Or will it never see the light of day?
