Kit Harington Screen Tests for Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four Reboot

Kit Harington

So although this isn’t something I would normally write about, being the Marvel fan boy and Game of Thrones fan that I am I feel this is something that needs to be discussed.

Following 20th Century Fox’s announcement that their planned 2015 reboot of their other big Marvel property Fantastic Four is heading into the casting phase, Variety is reporting that the studio is currently screen testing actors, one of those actors being Game of Thrones star Kit Harington for the role of Reed Richards AKA Mr Fantastic.

The studio has made clear it is looking to cast much younger in the series reboot, in hopes of drawing in a new audience to reinvigorate the franchise which was previously critically despised under 20th Century Fox management and was a major box office bomb with Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer.

Let me get this straight, I love me some Kit Harington (and if you’ve seen him shirtless in the trailer for Roland Emmerich’s Pompeii you likely do too) and Game of Thrones fans know he’s a brilliant actor, but I can’t help but feel 20th Century Fox’s plan to age down the characters in this franchise is only going to leave them in the same messy patch they are trying to pull this franchise out of.

Part of the charm of the Fantastic Four, and part of why they are so popular on the page, is that they’re older characters of varying ages and kind of a blended family unit. This brings a more diverse perspective on their new found abilities and careers as super heroes and the effects on the relationships between them. Besides, they’re astronauts, a career which I’m fairly sure isn’t too common among the mid 20’s set. And how many people in their mid 20’s have doctorates in engineering, math and physics?

Other actors said to be in the screen testing process for parts in the film are Saoirse Ronan, Kate Mara and Miles Teller with Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) being the only actor currently officially cast in the role of Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch, brother of Susan Storm.

Chronicle director Josh Trank will also direct.

So what do you think? Will 20th Century Fox continue to drag the Fantastic Four franchise through the mud? Or could aging down the characters work for the franchise? And what do you think of Kit Harington as a potential Mr Fantastic? If all else fails, another failure could see the property rights revert back to Marvel Studios who sold off their Fantastic Four and X-Men film rights to 20th Century in the mid 90’s.
