Miles Morales to take over in The Amazing Spider-Man 4?

Morale Banner

Well well well nerds and fanboys, we’re a mere day away from the release of Sony Pictures blockbuster sequel The Amazing Spiderman 2 on April 16 (May 2nd in the US) and whether you love or loathe the direction the franchise seems to be heading, one thing we know for certain is that (aptly named) director Marc Webb will definitely be back for the third installment before stepping down and handing the reigns over to another director for The Amazing Spider-Man 4.

But while we’re talking Spider-Man and a changing of the guard, this got me thinking about comments that the franchise marquee star Andrew Garfield made last year regarding his role as Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, in the franchise. Garfield told Yahoo! Movies in an interview when asked about The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which already has a May 4th 2018 release):

“I mean I’m under contract for another one after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.”

So what does this mean? Obviously nothing is set in stone yet. They haven’t even started filmingThe Amazing Spider-Man 3 yet and if the studio really wanted him to come back for a fourth film they could always pull up in his driveway with a couple of dump trucks overflowing with hundred dollar bills. But seeing as how Sony seems pretty dead set on creating and maintaining their own Spidey Cinematic Universe, akin to what Marvel is doing with their Marvel Cinematic Universe right now, and with their plans to create spin-off franchises out of both anti-hero Venom and The Sinister Six, one might think that even if they can’t or won’t bring back Garfield for a fourth film perhaps they’ll take an alternative approach to continue the main franchise whether that means continuing with the character of Peter Parker or not.

No Peter Parker? So what does that mean? Well, what about Miles Morales? For those who don’t know, Miles Morales, who was created by Brian Michael Bendis, was the first black character to take over the role of Spider-Man after the Death of Spider-Man story line and first appeared in the fourth issue of the Ultimate Fallout series.

The Tales of Miles

As a relatively lesser known character but definitely an interesting one, Morales could fit well in to line with the continuity to keep the character going in Sony’s cinematic universe in the absence of Garfield. But could mainstream audiences take to anyone other than Peter Parker under the mask? Is Morales the best choice or would you like to see Garfield remain in the role?

On a personal note, I’d love to see some diversity. Especially when it opens up a whole new side to the Spider-Man universe that the mainstream audience is most likely not aware. One thing I definitely don’t want to see however is yet another origin story or reboot.
