Big Jim’s Big Movie Reviews: The Dictator

The Dictator

This movie stars-

  • Sacha Baron Cohen – Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen
  • Ben Kingsley as Tamir
  • Anna Faris as Zoey

“The Dictator” is the latest movie starring, and co-written, by Sacha Baron Cohen. It is his fourth film in the lead role. In “The Dictator” he plays Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen. The film also stars Ben Kingsley as Tamir, Aladeen’s uncle and second-in-command, and Anna Faris as Zoey the hippy American girl who plays a significant role in the development of Aladeen’s character.

The story is centered on the life of Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen the dictator of the North African Republic of Wadiya. Aladeen is your typical dictator living in amazing luxury while the oppressed masses live in poverty. All who upset him over anything, and I mean anything, are put to death. When Aladeen is summoned to the United Nations to explain if he is in possession of nuclear weapons, he is betrayed by his uncle who attempts to have him assassinated. During the assassination attempt Aladeen’s supreme beard is removed, which leaves him unrecognizable. This sets up the rest of the film as Aladeen tries to reclaim his throne and power but along the way the people he meets just might teach him the way of democracy.

I have had a lot of people tell me that they hated the movie, but I would put it down as “Watchable”. There is certainly a lot of over-the-line shock value humour, but what would you expect from Sacha Baron Cohen? Ali G, Borat, Bruno all have this formula of pushing buttons and boundaries. You can’t go to a Sacha Baron Cohen film expecting anything different. It’s true that Sacha writes films with scenes that can make you throw-up in your mouth, but for me I would rather have that kind of vomit than be puking over the latest Miley Cyrus film preview.

So, over all if you enjoyed the Ali G movie, you’ll like this. Sacha Baron Cohen has the gift of highlighting society’s uncomfortable truths in his movies, and he does it again in “The Dictator”.
