KindaWinter Steam Sale – Day 1

It’s that time of the year that wallets fear again; your savings account worst nightmare – the Steam Sale. This time Valve hasn’t done anything too crazy, just good games and good prices.

Before we get started on today’s (Friday 21st) deals, we’ll start off with some the three golden rules of Steam Sales.

  1. Do not buy a game that is not on daily deal or at least 75% off on a flash sale until the last day as it may go on sale later in the week and you’ll have wasted a little cash.
  2. NEVER turn on “Remember my payment information”, you’ll regret it, seriously, this makes it way too easy to pick up shit you’ll never play, even months after the sale has ended. Trust me, I learnt the hard way.
  3. In case you didn’t listen to number 2, a tip to minimize damage – Always check out a game as a gift and into your inventory, and only redeem it when you go to play it. That way, any impulse buy you do pick up and don’t play you will hopefully be able to trade for something you actually want later down the line.

With all that out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.

Prince of Persia Franchise8233

Steam is primarily pushing the newest Prince of Persia game in this pack. I personally didn’t enjoy it as much as some of the previous games in the series. But at $2.50 for the single game or $12.25 for the whole pack, you’ll defiantly get your money’s worth.

If you don’t want to go for the complete back, I would strongly recommend picking up The Sands of Time, which is an amazing game and in my opinion the epitome of the series.

Verdict:  Definitely grab Sands of Time, the rest are optional.

 Scribblenauts Unlimited

218680

A more casual game, personally not something I’m interested in. Apparently Amazon are going to have a 75% sale on this game over Christmas, so no reason to buy it on Steam.

Verdict: Wait for the Amazon sale if you really want it.

Borderlands Franchise

You probably already know about this game, if not there is a lot of reviews, youtube videos and hype around of about it. Amazing if you have friends to play with, lackluster solo. This video sums up my opinion pretty well.

Verdict: Don’t need to go into this game, if you got friends it’s amazing. Else, pass.

Wargame: European Escaltion58610
I’ve never played this game, from the description it seems like a modern day Supreme Commander, but don’t quote me on that. For $10 you get the game and all DLC free which is a bonus. The game has an 81 on metacritic, so if you’re a RTS fan looking for your next fix, why not?

Verdict: Good pickup for RTS fans

 Mirror’s Edge

17410A first person platformer set in a futuristic dystopian city where you play a message courier who is part of a revolutionary movement set on usurping the totalitarian government. It’s a good looking game, plays decently and for $2.50 is a steal. I found the control scheme a little hard to master and not as fluid as others did, but maybe I just suck.

Verdict: Great game for $2.50, stunning visuals, no reason not to.

Hitman Franchisewintersale2012_hitmanfranchise

There has been a lot of coverage on Absolution, a lot of people loved it, and a lot of people old school fans think it does not live up to the franchise. Lacking the sandbox elements of the previous games, the levels are a lot more linear and directed, being constantly pushed from point A to point B. That said, it is still a good game, but I would have preferred it stayed more true to the classic Hitman formula.

I would defiantly recommend picking up Blood Money or Silent Assassin for $2.50 each, both these games are amazing, with Blood Money being on my “Games every gamer must play” list.

Verdict: Definitely grab Blood Money. Now. Do it. Absolution is at a good price for a game released a month ago, is a good game it of itself.

That’s it for Day 1, stay tuned for Day 2!
