Last night, Nintendo President Satoro Iwata announced the next generation of Pokémon. Pokémon X and Y will be the first in the series to take place in a full 3D environment and will be released simultaneously worldwide in October this year. Featuring new Pokémon (including 3 new starters) as well as old favourites, it is promised to make full use of the 3DS hardware.

In the announcement, Mr Iwata took a long stroll down memory lane, going all the way back to 1996 with the release of Red and Green versions in Japan. He spoke of the evolution of the series with each generation, as well as the reduction between Japanese release dates and the release dates of the rest of the world. The game footage in the trailer looks fantastic, with the cities looking bigger and more lifelike than ever before, and the battles beautifully action packed. The real question though, is: ‘What is going to make this different to all the other versions of Pokémon?’. Mr Iwata spent a great deal of time talking about the concurrent release dates, without mentioning any new features we can expect from the next generation of Pokémon. For a long time now the series has suffered from stagnation. If you’ve played one, you’ve pretty much played ‘em all. Can we expect Pokémon X any Y to bring more to the table than just a stack of new Pokémon to catch? I’m skeptical that it will, but hopeful that I’m wrong. And to be honest, I’ll probably buy it either way.
